Apraxia and TIA

A transient ischemic attack (TIA), often called a "mini-stroke," can be a significant risk factor for developing apraxia, as both conditions involve disruptions in blood flow to the brain, which can lead to difficulties with motor planning and coordination, causing symptoms like trouble performing complex movements or speaking clearly, which are characteristic of apraxia; essentially, a TIA can sometimes trigger a temporary episode of apraxia symptoms due to the localized brain ischemia

Apraxia is a motor disorder that affects a person's ability to plan and execute movements. A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a temporary episode that can cause weakness, vision problems, and slurred speech.

Apraxia
  • A chronic condition that affects a person's ability to move, speak, or use tools

  • Can affect the lips, jaw, tongue, limbs, or face
  • Can be caused by stroke, brain injury, dementia, or brain tumors

  • Symptoms include difficulty speaking, moving limbs, or using tools

  • Treatments include physical, speech, and occupational therapy
TIA

  • A temporary episode that can cause weakness, vision problems, and slurred speech
  • Symptoms usually resolve within 24 hours
  • Treatments include medication, surgery, and healthy lifestyle changes
